Migraine Suffering
For around five percent of Australians, migraines are an unbearable medical condition which can cause nausea, ache, sensitivity to light and sound and even loss of vision.
Migraine gets YOU out of order in almost no time
Many migraine sufferers report a very quick onset with almost no time to take appropriate medications. Glare, noise (even not loud) can exacerbate it within minutes.
Migraines are terrible headaches that typically can last from 4-72 hours. Migraines can be experienced from as little as once or twice a year, or as often as two or three times a week. The pain is severe, throbbing and can be on one side of the head or all over.
Migraines are thought to be caused by the dilation of blood vessels in the head. When dilated, these blood vessels tug at the nearby nerve receptors causing incredible pain to sufferers.
Type of help available
Migraines vary greatly from person to person and so do treatment options for it.
There are currently four prevention and treatment options available to migraine sufferers:
- Avoid the trigger factors - this can be difficult, since migraines are often triggered by a combination of factors, including various types of food or lack of it for a prolonged period of time.
- Drug treatment - including pain killers, anti-inflammatory preparations and other drugs to alter pressure on blood vessels. Oral drugs, sprays and injections are available.
- Preventative medication – drugs can be taken on a daily basis to reduce the number of attacks.
- Non-drug therapies - including acupuncture, biofeedback, goggles, hypnotherapy, exclusion diets, relaxation, yoga, meditation, herbal or homeopathic remedies
There is now another option available. It is a new use of a well-established anti-ageing medicine – due to TGA restrictions, the actual name of these 'anti-wrinkle injections' cannot be named, but is a common treatment for facial wrinkles also used to stop migraines. And it’s gaining acceptance in the wider community.
Injections target the specific muscles that are overused using the technique of “following the pain”.
At the time of treatment patient has to identify the areas that they believe are the origin of the migraines. The medication is slightly dilated and is then injected into the identified muscles. The injections work by impairing the muscle's ability to flex. Some doctors massage injection site to ensure proper dispersion of the medication.
Toxin produces muscle paralysis, but this alone does not explain how it may prevent migraine pain. Research indicates that it may affect the way pain signals travel through the nervous system, block pain receptors or even reduce inflammation.
All it takes is about 20 minutes for the migraine treatment by this method and it usually takes effect within a few days to a week.
Patients report
relief from migraines
for about 3-4 months*
Compared to other treatments for migraines, which often produce side effects like upset stomach, weight gain and drowsiness, 95 percent of the patients studied did not experience any side effects from the injection treatments for migraines.
It is very important to make sure you chose a doctor that is experienced in migraine injections specifically, rather than just someone who administers the toxin for anti-ageing purposes only.
